Estonica has been created as a non-profit pool of knowledge that serves educational, cultural and other public interests – all texts are published under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike-Noncommercial licence.
Since 2000, following organisations have supported the creation and development of Estonica: Tiger Leap Foundation, Estonian Investment and Trade Agency, Gambling Tax Board, as well as the Swedish embassy in the framework of the „Year of the Baltic Countries“.
In 2009, the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research funded the creation of a new IT-platform for Estonica, as well as the renewal and expanding of the treatment of 20th century Estonian history. With the ministry’s support the history section was made available also in Russian, besides Estonian and English.
From April to October 2010 about a third of current material in Estonica will be made available in Russian as a result of the project „The creation of the Russian-language version of the Estonica web encyclopaedia“. The project is supported by the Integration and Migration Foundation Our People (MISA) and Estonian Ministry of Culture, and funded by the European Fund for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals.
We would like to thank all the individuals, museums and archives that have granted permission for the publication of their materials in Estonica.
