Coming-of-age rites were the least important ones in the Nordic countries and confirmation used to be the only ceremony for celebrating it. However, some ancient customs do exist, one example being brooch wearing in Setumaa. Only those women could wear the big brooch who were able to give birth to a child. When a girl was wearing a heaped brooch this signified the onset of menstruation and women who were not wearing brooches anymore had already passed their menopause.
