Peasants attacked by wolves
Author(s): Adam Olearius
Drawing by Adam Olearius depicting peasants attacked by wolves (ab. 1638). The war-ridden 16th century brought about an increase in the number of wolves in Livonia. People killed or wounded in battle were often left behind to the mercy of wolves. The beasts, thus accustomed to human flesh, often attacked ordinary peasants.
