Most Estonians at the beginning of World War One did not feel that they were being forcefully involved in somebody else’s war — national statehood was not on the agenda; the country was enjoying rapid economic growth and Russia had granted the Estonians political rights, which gradually worked in their favour in local governments. It was thus no wonder that large numbers of volunteers signed up immediately during the first days of the War.
