People rejoiced when the first Soviet occupation ended — the symbols of the hated regime and the innumerable pictures of the communist functionaries were publicly destroyed. The exhilaration, however, was short-lived, as it soon turned out that the new masters, the Third Reich, had no intention of restoring the Republic of Estonia.
