The founding congress of the Popular Front of Estonia was attended by 3267 voting members and about 500 guests and journalists. A large number of issues were discussed, such as the need to re-establish the Estonian Olympic Committee and problems of immigration and national relations. In spring 1988, the Central Committee of the Estonian Communist Party had followed the Front’s activities with scepticism, whereas by the autumn the situation had changed to the extent that Vaino Väljas expressed his support for the Congress and claimed that the Party’s aim was similar — independent nationhood on the basis of a union agreement.
