The Rakvere stronghold of the Order was established on the Danish initiative in the mid-13th century. The Wesenbergh stronghold was first mentioned in 1252. The stronghold was further fortified until the second half of the 16th century – first by the Livonian Oreder, then by the Russians and the Swedes – when it was so badly damaged that it was eliminated from the list of military fortifications.
