The Kaika domes in Karula Upland
Author(s): Toomas Tuul
Domes typical of South Estonian uplands emerged from the sediments of the lakes formed 12 000 years ago during the melting of the ice. The formation of the Karula domes were influenced by ice moving along the valley of Võrtsjärv, Peipsi and Hargla, which met at Karula. This is why ice persisted here longer than anywhere else in Estonia.
