The October 1939 call for Germans to return home (Heim ins Reich) was observed by the Estonian press with mixed feelings. On the one hand, the entire inter-war intellectual atmosphere in Estonia had been quite anti-German. On the other, only the most short-sighted did not realise that although the percentage of Estonians in the population increased by a few percent, and the ‘old enemy’ left, the simultaneous forceful division of Poland did not bode well for the small countries in Europe.
