Soldiers of the 8th Estonian Rifle Corps of the Red Army on the streets of Narva, 1 August 1944.
The baroque old town of Narva was mostly destroyed during a four-hour Soviet bombing raid on 6 March 1944. The retreating German troops later blasted the remaining church towers and other buildings. The town was not restored after the War, but was replaced by a largely characterless industrial city. The Castle and the Town Hall were fortunately spared from major damage, so remain attractive buildings to visit.
