Introduction to Estonica

Overview

Web encyclopaedia Estonica (www.Estonica.org) is a bilingual web publication, compiled by the Estonian Institute, with the aim of offering a compact and systematic overview of Estonian society, culture, history, nature, education, science, state administration and economy, and of the connections between these fields.

Estonica is a continually expanding and dynamic store of information. The texts are written by experts and are supplemented by archive materials and pictures taken by professional photographers. The project aspires to show Estonia as it is and help people to orientate in our cultural space. In addition to presenting objective information, Estonica tries to BE analytical and visionary, encouraging the reader to think about matters concerning Estonia also in the future.

Estonica consists of two hierarchical levels: the first derives from uniform principle of categorisation, and contains illustrated and edited overviews. The second level offers more thorough treatments on narrower topics. The overviews have generally been specially written for Estonica, whereas the second level also uses previously published articles.

Estonica takes into account the requirements of different kind of users, keeping in mind those interested both in Estonia and elsewhere in the world. The Estonian version focuses primarily on the needs of schoolchildren and teachers in compiling, supplementing and illustrating their study material.

Estonica should be viewable like most new web programmes. It is certainly true of Internet Explorer and Netscape varieties. In other cases the usage may depend on the programme's support on javascript and other codes used in Estonica.

The material available in the web encyclopaedia Estonica can be freely copied and used, as long as this does not serve any business interests. When using these texts and illustrations as source material, we kindly ask you to refer to Estonica. In public presentation in the net, on paper or some other manner you should inform the Estonian Institute.
